Bowls go greener

15 Dec, 2009 07:48 AM

The Whyalla Bowling Club has gone greener than their lawns, thanks to an almost $20,000 grant.

Through the community water grants projects, four rainwater tanks were installed at the club mid-year.

Club secretary Jeff Fell said the tanks certainly helped cut the club's water costs by about 40 per cent.

Before the tanks were installed, the club used mostly Murray River water and only had one small tank that leaked, which had to be removed.

Mr Fell said the water from the new tanks would be used for watering the grounds about twice a week, and general water usage such as toilet flushing.

The rainwater would not be used for drinking water, due to the club's location.

The grant came to the club's attention after the Whyalla City Council approached members about the idea.

Mr Fell said the club was pleased with the new tanks, which would assist them in many years to come.
