 Croatia raid the Lions' den

Croatia raid the Lions' den

01 Oct, 2009 12:30 AM

Lions hosted Croatia in the Association Cup semi-final on Sunday.

Both teams seemed to be at full strength for the start of the match with Croatia's Martin Marrik replacing the injured John Morris.

The game started with chances for both sides going to waste, several attempts at goal from distance failing to trouble either keeper.

Although the match was very open in the first half, both teams struggled to find their passing game.

Croatia's Anthony Joslyn-Neil started in the mid-field and Lions contained him well, often getting to the ball first or closing him down quickly before he was able to do any real damage.

The Lions were on the attack in the second half, with Steve Kinnear involved in just about everything thrown at Croatia.

However, much like the first half, chances created failed to be converted.

Croatia players hit Lions with attacks of their own as the game went on, with efforts on goal from Marrick and Joslyn-Neil - but still neither team could find the back of the net.

Although closely and at times fiercely contested, the 90 minute match failed to produce a goal and went into extra-time.

The first half of extra time began with Croatia's Sean Sheedy often finding space on the right to deliver crosses into the box with no real threat.

Joslyn-Neil soon after attempted to chip the Lions' keeper Tyler Welgraven , but saw his effort go wide.

Croatia continued to pressure the Lions' defence, who looked organised all day, this time dealing with a Croatia corner that was cleared of the line.

Shortly after Lions gained a free-kick outside the box, Gordon Worsnop swung over an inviting cross for Mic Prunty.

However, his header cleared the cross bar, giving Lions a boost of confidence.

Croatia gave the ball away in mid-field shortly after a pass across the Croatia box finding the incoming Steve Kinnear.

Kinnear showed a great first touch to set himself up and produce an excellent finish into the bottom corner, putting Lions up one nil.

The second half of extra-time would again see Lions on the attack, Sean McCann with a chance on goal that was spooned over the cross-bar.

Croatia then began to fight to find the equaliser, and although Andy Peacock had kept Joslyn-Neil in his pocket for most of the match, it was Joslyn-Neil who would escape the marking to pounce on a through ball.

Joslyn-Neil slotted home the equaliser past the Lions' keeper Tyler Welgraven just before the final whistle to send the match to penalties.

Lions' Worsnop began scoring with forward Aaron Peacock, the only player to miss, his effort saved by Jamie Tudhope in the Croatia goal.

Croatia converted all five of its penalties, with Wayne Dugan slotting home the winner.

Croatia progress to the Association Cup final, and Lions will be disappointed as it seemed to have the match won in extra-time.

However, the Lions team has improved in leaps and bounds over the past few weeks, something coaches Peacock and Worsnop can look forward to for 2010.

Croatia will meet Steel in the final.

Reserves

C roatia won a very open and high scoring match 4-3.

The game was very close, with Croatia's experienced players proving the difference on the day.

Lions players can hold their heads up high with a great season in the reserves, although having no silverware to show for their efforts in 2009.

Croatia will meet Wanderers in the final.
