West easily account for Bays

29 Jul, 2008 09:44 AM
West Whyalla bounced back from their narrow last start defeat by Central Whyalla when they easily defeated Weeroona Bay by 103 points at the Bennett Oval on Saturday.

The Bays kicked to the scoreboard end in the first quarter, which was favoured by a 2-3 goal breeze, but they trailed by 10 points at the first change.

The second quarter saw Westies pile on 7-4 to 1-0 in a good display of fast, play-on football.

They scored some excellent goals from long range with the Bays being unable to stem the onslaught.

Westies always had a player running past to receive a handball and they won the ball out of the centre square repeatedly.

They had too much pace for the Bays and they put a lot of pressure on the Bay backline when they were trying to clear the ball, which resulted in a lot of turnovers.

Westies third quarter was equally as impressive as their second as they scored 6-3 into the breeze with the Bays only managing to score 1-1 with it.

They had a massive 82 point lead at the final change and coasted to comprehensive victory in the last term.

Westies had five multiple goal scores with Shannon Winders leading the way with five, followed by Bradley Smith with four.

Full forward Simon Nowak chipped in with three as did centre half forward Brad Henderson and Kingsley Ware.

Richard Green was the Bays only multiple goal score with two.

He is not 100 percent fit and was unable to ruck, which put a lot of pressure on the Lion-heartened Cristian Hines.

The Bays were enthusiastic at times but they had few answers to Westies pace, team work and superior fitness.

Shannon Winders was best for Westies and also best on the ground in an excellent game topped off with five majors.

Blake Symons also played well as did Aaron Smith, Kode Patterson, Anthony Manfield and Nathan Covino.

Josh Parker was best for the Bays followed by Dale Gericke, Kian Smythe, Anthony How and Andrew Hoffman.

The road ahead sees Westies up against Roopena at the Memorial Oval on Saturday while Weeroona Bay will play South Whyalla at the Bennett oval on the same day.
