 Norths crush Weeroona Bay

Norths crush Weeroona Bay

17 Aug, 2008 11:30 PM
North Whyalla firmed as premiership favourites when they won their ninth match in a row.

Weeroona Bay was easily defeated by 124 points at the Memorial Oval on Sunday.

North were far too good in all facets of the game, their team work was a feature with a player always running past to receive a handball and they had a big winner at full forward in Nick Prokopec who finished with nine goals.

The Bays kicked to the school end in the first quarter, which was favoured by a two to three goal breeze, but it was North who won the points by having a handy 22 point lead at the first change.

North had an excellent second quarter when they piled on 7.4 to 1.2 to open up an even ten goal lead at the long break.

North had a huge advantage in experience as they only had two under 21s in their line up where as the Bays had 14.

However, strangely North were faster to the ball and much fitter which was very evident as they piled on 10.13 to just 1.3 after the long break.

North have won most of their matches this year by being much harder to the ball than their opponents and this was again the case in this game.

Prokopec was awesome at full forward.

He heads very well and is very mobile for a big man and his kicking for goal especially from long range is very good.

The Bays main concern is a lack of fitness, their numbers seem to be anxiously waiting for the season to end.

Nick Prokopec was easily the best for North and also best on ground.

He is easily the star recruit of the year.

Chad Menzies also did very well as did Everett Ernesti, Brad Mansell and Scott Daly who kicked five goals.

The Bays best were harder to find.

Lee Ringland did a lot of good work, Christian Hines battled well in ruck while Anthony How and Kian Smythe also had their moment.

North may grab the minor premiership from West Whyalla if they win their last two games against South and Roopena, while the Bays could have a rough chance of winning their third game of the season when they play Roopena at Bennett Oval on Saturday.
