Edey wins race to 100 goals
Weeroona Bay's under 17 player Cameron Edey won the race to be the first player in that grade to kick 100 goals this season, kicking 17 goals on the weekend against Centrals.
Before last week's game, Edey was two behind W Chad McLean who was on 85 goals, but McLean could only manage nine goals against North to now be on 94.
With West playing Central this weekend, no doubt he has a great chance to register his hundredth goal.
It was interesting watching the under 17s game unfold last week as they completely outplayed the young Roosters.
With every goal that Edey kicked, team manager Murray Angus was relaying his tally to all the other players and telling them to get the ball to him so he could get the magical number.
Edey is a young player with great potential and coaches the club's under 14 side.
He is also a regular in the League side, where he has added a further 13 goals this season.
Watching Edey play over the season has shown to me just how good a player he can be if he puts his mind to it, and I am predicting a big future for this young player.
Congratulations must go to young Cameron Edey on reaching this milestone.
I am quite sure that all Weeroona Bay supporters hope that he will kick a lot more goals for the club before he moves on to play football at a higher level.
All grades finals settled
In an unusual twist this season, all grades (down to the under 14s) are settled in the finals, with fourth placed in all the grades having a two-game buffer over the fifth placed opposition.
In the League, the main interest is who will finish minor premiers, with both West and Roopena tied on 13 wins.
With the Dragons playing the bottom-placed Centrals, Dragons should be odds on favourites to finish on top of the ladder.
Irrespective of where all teams finish, West will play Roopena in the second semi, while North will play Weeroona Bay in the first semi final.
The Reserve teams are in a similar boat, with both North and Weeroona Bay on 13 wins.
With both teams playing other sides in the finals, it will be a race to see who finishes minor premiers.
West has secured the minor premiers in both the under 17s and under 14s and, as with the other grades, positions can't change at all.
Usually at the last minor round game of the season, there is always interest at least in a couple of the clubs getting the double chance or even making the finals, but not this year.
This is definitely not a blot on the competition, and apart from Central not doing too well, it has been the most interesting season of football in Whyalla for a number of years - especially in the A Grade.
Demons disappointment
South Whyalla were very disappointed to miss out on taking part in this year's finals.
Although many would say that their year has been a failure, I tend to disagree, especially when you sit down and analyse their season.
Firstly they lost a huge amount of players from last year, about 15 or 16 of what you would call regular players.
Then, then when they went out and recruited some quality players, they lost some of them due to nobody's fault at all.
One example of that is Kendall Plant, who won the Anzac Day medal as best on ground, and was then transferred away from Whyalla due to employment and never played for the club again.
There are a few other hard luck stories, but to be fair to the other clubs, I am sure that they all have stories to tell about the unavailability or disappearance of some players.
On the plus side of all this, South have blooded some good young players which will be good for them in the future.
From what I have been told, Souths may just be getting a few players back into the fold.
Coach Grant Sleep will no doubt be all out to improve his playing stocks to improve on this year's disappointment as they try to get back in the finals.
Centrals search for new coach.
All reports coming out of the Roosters camp is that they have already begun their search for a new coach for next season.
I believe current coach Darryl Byles will not be doing the job next season, and that Centrals has already formed a committee to look at the direction the club should take in the future and has a shortlist of people to talk to.
With the club having their worst year on record and probably not winning a game this season, the task will be hard for them to convince someone to take the job on.
However, I firmly believe that there is a good crop of juniors at the club that someone could mould into a good team, but it will take a little patience.
It is hard to imagine that two years ago Centrals were the top club in Whyalla and had just won their eighth grand final in ten years - so why has the fall from being top dog been so swift?
That is one of the questions that must be asked in the review.
While I know that shift work with players has become a major problem now (especially 12 hour shifts), the problem must surely be much deeper than that.
Player Milestone
Last week saw West coach Russell Sawford play his 50th League game for the club.
All up Sawford has played more than 250 League games in Whyalla, having previously played for South and Weeroona Bay.
Spider's Selections
Last week I selected all three winners, while my guest John Warner chose only two, missing out on his chosen draw between West and North.
This week my guest tipster is my colleague at the Whyalla News Jade Walker, who admits she knows very little about football and has selected Roopena, West and North.
My selections are Roopena in a close one over Weeroona Bay, West to defeat Central and North to defeat South.
