Weeroona Bay - although soundly beaten for three quarters - outplayed a tired looking Roopena in the last quarter by six goals to one, eventually losing by 23 points.
But despite the loss they did gain some respectability from the football public by showing they will not be the easy beats of the competition this season.
The first three quarters were forgettable for the Bays as they were completely outclassed, with the Roos having little trouble in establishing a very handy 50-point lead at the last break, but that meant little to the young Tiger players as they ran riot for most of the last quarter.
The Bays were put on the back foot right from the start with two of their players coming off the ground in the first four minutes of play, one on a stretcher and another being injured early in the second quarter, leaving them with only the bare minimum to see out the rest of the game.
The Bays matched it with the Roos for the first quarter to trail by only 14 points at quarter time, but went to sleep in the second as Roopena completely outplayed a lacklustre opposition by six goals to one to lead by a massive 45 points at the long break and looking like it would be a walk in the park for the rest of the game.
The Bays showed a little more spirit in the third quarter, but the Roos were still in control at the final break.
But then the Bays unleashed the best football of the night by completely running the Roos off their legs, making them look tired and exposing a few deficiencies in their side that the coaches will have to work on before next week's game.
I thought best on ground was James Vanhoof who was a winner at centre half forward all night and finished the game with three goals, Peter Usher caused plenty of problems in the mid field with his skillfull play and long penetrating kicks to the forwards, with others to do well being Greg Fiebig, Nick Warren, Aaron Kwaterski, Paul Zucker, Matty Manfield and Kynan Buhlmann.
It was hard to pick a good W/Bay player for the first three quarters, but they came to life in that exciting last quarter with their best being James Gruitt, Johnathon Kroll, Ian Mills, Chris Mills, Geoff Appleton, Josh Parker and Anthony Malcolm.
All up it was not a good game of football for three quarters, but the way the Bays played in that last quarter is why we all go to watch our great game of football.
If the Bays can get consistency in their game they will cause other clubs a lot of headaches, while Roopena have definitely improved on last season and will be a force come finals time.
