Cricket needs light

21 Jan, 2010 07:52 AM
Following the success of the Martelco Hire Twenty 20 Big Bash, I feel it is time Whyalla had a ground with adequate lighting on which more sports can be played.

The Big Bash final was scheduled for a day/night game that attracted a lot of community interest, but could not happen because of the inadequacies of the portable lights, which were to be supplied by the sponsors.

I believe that when trialled last Thursday night, although it lit up the ground beautifully, there was a problem that players lost sight of the ball.

When the ball was skied into the outfield, the light towers were not tall enough.

It was decided that a dangerous situation could arise putting players at risk, so the final was brought forward two hours as a day game.

This showed that Whyalla is screaming out for a venue that has adequate lighting for sports and is needed quickly.

We are a sports mad city and also try and get people back interested in local sport - this would be a step in the right direction.

I do know that a working group is already doing a feasibility study into lighting up Jubilee Park.

Although I hope that something comes out of it quickly, my preference would be Memorial Oval.

The infrastructure is already in place and the oval is centrally located.

A number of sports could use the facilities, not just cricket.

With the recent Twenty 20 cricket proving that different sports can work together and if the clubs do not want to use the canteen facilities at Memorial Oval, there are plenty of mobile caterers that could be hired to supply food and drinks to patrons.

Although I am not privy to how sporting bodies can get Government grants, I would say that if there was a united front from about four or five different sporting bodies, plus with the council on side, it should be looked at very favourably.

We have a lot of good weather here and if we had adequate lights, some summer and winter sports could be played during the week at night.

Many patrons could take their blankets to sit on the grassy area surrounding the playing arena at Memorial Oval that is, if it is the preferred venue.

If the idea was to go ahead, there are three options to be considered; Jubilee Park, Memorial Oval and the upgrade of Bennett Oval's lighting.

But that would need the approval of the WFL, while the first two options are council grounds.

It would be up to council to be responsible for the upkeep with assistance from the sporting bodies involved.

I also know there are many grounds in Whyalla that already have lights and one could say we should utilise them more instead of the extra expense of lighting up another ground and they are probably correct.

All I am saying is let's get moving, do something about it and try and make Whyalla the region's sporting centre and not sit on our hands and do nothing.

Remember, all elite sports people had to start somewhere and all of the worlds best athletes remember their "grassroots" sporting days.

So lets give our locals a sporting chance and the people who want to go watch local sport.

Who knows, we may just be able to entice the odd international or state side to Whyalla in the future.

Please, at least let's think about it.
