Fuel retailers and traders have been playing hide and seek with Whyalla since its glorious days more than 20 years ago.
It is believed that when Whyalla was at its economic and financial peak there were at least 25 fuel outlets in and around town, the competition was good and the residents had more choice.
Long time resident Phil Stone recollects how the servos started shutting down as the population decreased and Whyalla started heading towards a down turn in economy.
He is hopeful that with the increasing population and prosperity at the moment more competitors would enter the market.
From his recollection Phil said there were petrol stations in McBride Terrace, Essington Lewis, near the Whyalla Bowling Club, on Lacey Street, Jenkins Avenue, McRitchie Crescent, One Stop Shop, Beerworth Avenue and one near the Sundowner Hotel and two at the corner of Playford Avenue.
Over the years many closed down and a lot of them changed hands.
At the moment there are five fuel retailers with two dominating the markets due to incentives and discounts.
In the current local market are outlets run by Coles, Woolworths, BP's on McRitchie, Mobil Midwest, Whyalla Fuel Services and Des's Cabs sells fuel from its base.
Mr Stone said all outlets were doing well when there were many because the competition was high and vehicle owners had their preferences.
He said now drivers just go to the outlet, which has cheaper fuel whereas in the past brand names, reputation of outlets and services provided all mattered.
Mr Stone said as much as he would love to see more competition and price fight the prospects of getting in new retailers was very low.
He said in a few years with increased investments and population there was a chance to develop some interest but it looked bleak.
