The new Youth Advisory Council was officially launched this week.
Operated through Plaza Youth Centre and co-ordinated by Ginette Darke, the council has 15 enthusiastic members.
The elected youth mayor was Colin Parsons and the deputy mayor is Chantel Coupland.
Mrs Darke said the youths were thrilled to be elected and were eager to lead the council through to the end of 2010.
She said the youth council was a diverse group, with ages ranging between 14 and 19.
As part of their work, they have began a community involvement program named Youth Council Community Involvement Program (YCCIP).
Becoming community involved included becoming a part of Youth Say and the Aboriginal Youth Advisory Council.
Mrs Darke said these two groups organised unstructured activities for youths.
She said youths should look out for their activity timetables to join in the fun.
The council has members acting in an advisory capacity within the Governing Council of Whyalla High School, and also hope to organise it with other high schools.
Two members were also finalising enrolments to become State Emergency Services volunteers.
Other members are involved in the Save Point Lowly Action Group and South Australian Police Drug Action Team.
Mrs Darke said other community groups were in the process of being finalised.
Other future plans were to go into primary schools and student representative councils.
Mrs Darke said she hoped give some of the members training in leadership skills to build confidence.
Members would also work and get advice on youth issues from the youth sector network.
Anyone who was interested in nominating for the Youth Advisory Council was encouraged to call Mrs Darke at the Plaza Youth Centre on 8645 3999.
The Youth Advisory Council is funded by the Whyalla City Council.
