 Super school concept released

Super school concept released

10 Jun, 2009 11:30 PM
The first conceptual designs for Whyalla's proposed super schools have been released.

While parents of school children can, and have been, attending information sessions on the designs, members of the public can view the designs at a meeting on Monday, June 22 at the Westland's Hotel at 7pm.

Eyre and Western regional director Rowena Fox said while public schools and preschool consultations will continue, the general public will now also have the opportunity to learn more about the proposal.

"Our schools definitely need to consider how they move forward to reflect twenty-first century learning," she said.

"Whatever the outcome of this first round of voting, it will be determined by the Whyalla community in the best interests of our children.

"Therefore, it is essential that other key Whyalla stakeholders such as local interest groups, business and the broader Whyalla community are also able to consider the proposal and contribute their feedback.

"The general consensus from the Whyalla school and preschool communities is to proceed with the proposal.

"This is a critical decision for the future of Whyalla and so we now wish to seek even wider feedback from the local parents, principals, teachers and students."

The concept released information about where the precincts would be located and how they will operate.

The three main locations, central, West and East are;

A birth to year six precinct at Whyalla Stuart and Memorial Oval and a birth to year six, year seven to year 12 and a birth to year 12 special school at Nicolson Avenue.

The Nicolson Avenue precinct would be divided into separate hubs or 'schools-within-schools'.

Th e birth to year six school would be separated into early years; birth to year two, middle; year three to year five and upper primary; year six.

The year seven to year 12 school would be divided into middle; year seven to nine, and senior school; year 10 to 12.

The plans will go ahead if majority of parents at primary and secondary schools vote in favour of the proposal.

Voting is planned to take place from Tuesday, June 23 to Monday, June 29.

If the vote is in favour and the Government accepts the proposal, then schools will be asked to vote to close and to become part of the proposal - no date has been set regarding this vote.

For more information on voting parents can contact their pre-school director or principal.
