Six new suburbs for Lowly

25 Jun, 2009 12:30 AM
Six new suburbs will be created at Point Lowly, following a decision by Whyalla City Council at a meeting last Monday.

The Department of Transport, Energy and Infrastructure (DTEI) recommended the council create new suburbs within the shack area site from Point Lowly to Douglas Point.

The new suburbs will be False Bay, Point Lowly, Fitzgerald Bay, Backy Point, Douglas Point South and Douglas Point.

The Nomenclature Committee recently undertook a project to assign street names within the shack site areas, which fall into the council's jurisdiction.

In the process of that project, it was found that the properties located in the area did not have a suburb locality and therefore fell into the Whyalla suburb and postcode reference.

Upon consultation with the DTEI it was proposed new suburbs to cover the shack properties be created using the existing geographical identity names of the region to define the suburbs.

The initial proposal was forwarded to the DTEI for their comments with six defined suburb boundaries within the area nominated with a response received on April 21.

"The only changes were the inclusion of the suggested Point Lowly North within the existing Point Lowly suburb given its relatively small size and the renaming of Backy Bay to Backy Point, as Backy Bay was officially renamed Fitzgerald Bay in 1937," the council agenda read.

With the council's acceptance of these suburbs, the DTEI will consult with the emergency service organisations and Australia Post.

After agreement has been reach by all parties, the DTEI will undertake the required public consultation process to have the new suburbs officially created.
