Show hailed a success

18 Aug, 2008 12:30 AM
Organisers are hailing the thirty-eighth annual Whyalla Show as another huge success.

About 14,000 people passed through the show gates over the weekend to enjoy the carnival atmosphere.

The weather was a little cool on Saturday but the sun made up for it on Sunday, delivering perfect weather.

Show-goers were treated to the usual stellar line-up of roving performers, amusement rides, spruikers and specialty stalls and events.

"We had a lot more traders this year and the majority of them were very happy with the way it all went," Whyalla Show Society secretary Michelle Head said.

Mrs Head said the children had a great time enjoying all the entertainment going on around the place.

"Ben 10 and Four-arms were very popular with the kids," she said.

"We were the first to have them in South Australia," she added.

Humpty Dumpty and Jack and Jill even made an appearance.

"For an hour the kids danced and sang, it went down really well," she commented.

A full marquee of spectators enjoyed the Bluebush Boutique and Ed Harry Menswear fashion parade.

X-treme Trials motorbike stunt-riding was another huge hit while Mrs Head noted the Clydesdale trolley rides were also very popular.

According to Mrs Head, Old McDonald's Travelling Farm and Nursery had up to 100 people queuing to get in.

The spectacular fireworks get better and better each year and definitely impressed spectators this year.

"They were excellent, the best we've ever had," Whyalla Show Society president Ian Druitt said.

The competitive sections of the show received 4,205 entries overall.

Mrs Head said the show had an increase of sponsors this year.

"The sponsors dollars go directly towards the entertainment for the show," she said.

"We spent over $30,000 on the entertainment this year."

Mrs Head went on to say that many favourable comments were received about the great quality of entertainment and the variety of trade stalls.

Organisers say the crowds were very well behaved and a fantastic overall show was enjoyed by all.

The Whyalla Show Society would like to thank all the volunteers, service and sporting clubs for all their efforts in making this year's show one of the greatest ever.

Show results will appear in this week's Thursday edition of your Whyalla News.
