The current increase in the rabbit population has led some members of the public to set rabbit traps.
Rabbit traps are illegal to use.
The RSPCA have warned the public that whilst it is not illegal to sell rabbit traps, it is illegal to set them to catch rabbits and anyone with knowledge of people setting traps should call the RSPCA on 8644 0172 or the police on 8648 8020.
RSPCA rescue officer, Warren Bright said the traps don’t just catch rabbits they also catch native animals and pets.
“The traps are considered cruel and inhumane as they can cause considerable suffering and extensive damage to an animal’s leg,” Mr Bright said.
The vets at the Whyalla Veterinary Clinic said they have had dogs brought in with their legs caught in the traps after being taken for walks in the bush.
Dogs are very inquisitive and will explore rabbit warrens making them vulnerable to being injured by rabbit traps.
A Chihuahua was brought in to the Whyalla Veterinary Clinic on the weekend after it was caught in a rabbit trap whilst being walked.
Fortunately it was an old trap and the dog escaped with only bruising on the leg.
