Port number one ticket item

09 Mar, 2010 11:10 AM
A cape sized-capable bulk-commodities facility at Port Bonython was claimed as "the number one ticket item" for infrastructure by South Australia Chamber of Mines and Energy (SACOME).

SACOME described the policy announcements by the Labor and Liberal camps as "missing the main game".

SACOME's chief executive Jason Kuchel said it was infrastructure the mining industry really needed most in South Australia.

"It has access to broader electricity grid networks, water, rail, road and port facilities that this sector needs - and that requires a bold plan," he said.

"In the next five years alone, South Australia needs funds from sources such as the Infrastructure Australia fund to initiate a deep-sea export port.

"SACOME calls upon the next State Government to support this and if necessary, temporarily underwrite tonnages for the first five years of operations."

Mr Kuchel said in addition, a further $100 million a year from the State Government is needed to kick start crucial infrastructure needed to generate mining activity.

"While the political parties have acknowledged the need for a deep-sea port, it is disappointing to not see a substantial commitment to developing the project," he said.

"This absence of a serious commitment is not going to give SA's resources sector great confidence in developing iron ore projects in the state's north and on the Eyre Peninsula."

SACOME said the resources of South Australia are in need of a deep-water port at Port Bonython for Cape-sized vessels.

SACOME claimed without such a facility, the emerging iron ore province in the north of the State goes without a cost-effective means of export.
