Member for Giles Lyn Breuer commented about the proposed Point Lowly port in State Parliament last week.
“My community and I are concerned about the proposal to build a jetty over the cuttlefish aggregation,” she said.
“(The cuttlefish) have become a unique worldwide tourism attraction.
“Film crews from all over the world visit the area.”
Not only are the cuttlefish attracting film crews but other State members of parliament.
The Minister for Tourism Jane Lomax-Smith’s commended Ms Breuer on the wonderful tourism attraction of the giant cuttlefish.
Ms Lomax-Smith recently went diving with the cuttlefish and called it “the most exciting experience I have ever had in South Australia.”
Ms Breuer said there are other places that are more appropriate for the deep water port proposed for the Point Lowly Peninsula.
“We do not want to hold back the mining industry,” she said.
“We believe it is important and we want to be part of it, but we do not particularly want that area to be decimated.
“We are looking at shipping out copper, sulphur, iron ore and, potentially, uranium, and it seems to me to be totally inappropriate to be looking at working in an area such as the cuttlefish area.
“Certainly, my community and I will be following it up with the State Government.”
