Julie Bishop to visit

04 Feb, 2010 10:06 AM
Federal coalition deputy leader and foreign affairs shadow minister Julie Bishop will be visiting Whyalla on Saturday, February 13 at the request of local member Rowan Ramsey.

A born and bred South Australian, Mr Ramsey would like Whyalla residents to have a chance to meet Ms Bishop to discuss the economic dynamics of the city.

"Julie, who was born and bred in the Adelaide Hills, has a better understanding of South Australian issues than a lot of other members of the Federal Parliament," Mr Ramsey said.

"As one of our senior leadership team she has wields considerable influence in the party room and I see her as a valuable ally as I seek to promote the great opportunities and challenges of regional South Australia.

"As a Western Australian member she has experience with the benefits and challenges of managing a resources boom and as a former minister for education, Julie also brings a full understanding of the difficulties facing regional students in accessing educational opportunities."

Mr Ramsey said Ms Bishop was also a role model for women in Whyalla.

"On a personal note Julie is a great role model for competent ambitious women," he said.

"Young women in particular find her an inspiration."

Ms Bishop has served as deputy to three different Liberal leaders.

"Her entry into Parliament was not all clear sailing, having to win her seat of Curtin against a Liberal Independent backed by former Prime Minister Howard," Mr Ramsey said.

"Julie showed her metal by winning anyway and proving her skills and quickly earning the Prime Minister's respect and her place as a minister."

Ms Bishop, Mr Ramsey and Liberal candidate for Giles in the upcoming State election Chad Oldfield will be going into Westland Shopping Centre on the Saturday morning to meet with any locals who would like the opportunity, before she addresses a lunch at the Foreshore Motel.

Everyone is welcome to attend the lunch.

Bookings are essential and may be made through Mr Ramsey's office.
