Filmmaker takes up festival challenge

03 Nov, 2009 10:15 AM
Move over Baz Luhrmann and make way for Whyalla's very own filmmaker, David Wade.

Mr Wade has just returned from three weeks in Montr?al Canada, taking part in a 10-day Kabaret filmmaking challenge hosted by Canadian film group Kino.

Mr Wade was selected for the prestigious international festival and met with Danish film director and screen writer Lars von Trier and New Zealander filmmaker and Academy Award-winning screenwriter Jane Campion.

He said the event was equal to, if not better, than any festival he had been too and enjoyed the experience to work with people from all over the world.

"It was great to collaborate with people from all walks of life," Mr Wade said.

"The festival was inspiring."

He said many unique films of all different genres from experimental to music clips were made in about three days.

During the festival Mr Wade produced and starred in his own "typically Australian" feature film using state-of-the-art equipment.

He starred alongside Canadian model and actress Cindy Haffenden.

Mr Wade said the response was excellent and he managed to shock viewers with his self confessed "odd" sense of humour.

Mr Wade said he planned to enter his quirky black comedy into future film festivals.

He said the film is about the morning after without giving too much of the story and twist away.

Mr Wade worked on filmmaker and co-founder of the Kino group Christian Laurence's $8.5 million feature film set during the challenge.

"I got the star treatment," Mr Wade said.

A Whyalla News journalist was the fourth person in Whyalla to view the feature film and witnessed the talent of the emerging local filmmaker.

On his journey to the French speaking city of Montr?al Mr Wade received a surprising message from actress, film director and screenwriter, Rachel Ward.

Ms Ward, in love with Mr Wade's new script, has agreed to mentor the promising filmmaker for his upcoming film to be shot in February.

Ms Ward co-directed Beautiful Kate with her famous husband, Bryan Brown.

It was filmed in the Flinders Rangers and starred Rachel Griffiths.

Mr Wade said he planned to fly to New South Wales to meet with Ms Ward for ideas and thoughts on the script, casting and filming of his feature.

"I was told there was no hope when I asked her agency for help," he said.

Mr Wade has proved those people wrong and will be working with the famous director and writer in the upcoming months.

Mr Wade wanted to thank Country Arts SA for all their support and funding and is excited about his next adventure.

He said he is full steam ahead in planning the film with a well known cast and assistance from Ms Ward.
