 Fete needs public's support

Fete needs public's support

29 Oct, 2009 09:23 AM
Members of the Whyalla Hospital Ladies Auxiliary Inc work throughout the year to put up their garden fete.

Over the years the number of volunteers and local supporters has dwindled but the enthusiasm of the ladies is intact.

Group president Muryelle Rosalia said the fete started soon after the hospital was constructed in 1940 and during their peak years they managed to raise more than $10,000.

In the past few years the group has been lucky to raise at least $7000.

She said the fete is one of the few events in Whyalla where the money is raised locally and used locally.

The group has donated more than $1 million to the hospital since it started raising funds through various sources.

Ms Rosalia said the group had about 50 volunteers involved in a number of activities and some worked from home, knitting and sewing.

She said all the funds raised have been used to upgrade facilities at the hospital and buy equipment so that less people have to travel to Adelaide.

"I am really looking for more support this year and hope that more people will turn up at our fete and make it a success on November 7," Ms Rosalia said.

"We need a bit of manpower to help out, but the main thing is getting support from the public to come to the fete.

"Although no target has been set, we would love to raise a maximum amount and break the records of our recent years."

The fete will be at the Whyalla hospital gardens from 11am to 2pm.

Entertainment will be provided by Jazztonic, and the stalls will have craft, gift baskets, soft toys, face painting, white elephant, barbecue, hot potatoes and morning tea.

The highlight of the day will be the arrival of Father Christmas.

The auxiliary contributed funds over the past few years for the following:

- Five single sofa bed chairs for paediatric unit ($7,454.00)

- Ice machine for use on the Women's and Children's Health Unit ($3,490)

- Oxylog Portable Ventilator ($16,084)

- Two monitors for Accident and Emergency ($6,000)

- Accident and Emergency dressing trolley ($2,650)

- Specialised chair for chemotherapy suite (($5,550)
