Drug lab bust

19 Jan, 2010 08:35 AM
Two adults face charges related to allegedly manufacturing prohibited drugs and forensic scientists from Adelaide dismantled a lab from their back yard last week.

A 44-year-old man was remanded in custody on Wednesday and a 40-year-old woman was bailed to appear in the Whyalla magistrate's court at a later date.

The raid was conducted at a house on Pickhaver Street near the main shopping hub.

Whyalla Police Station's Senior Sergeant Steve Sims said the two have been charged with taking part in manufacturing of controlled drug for sale.

He said the arrests were made following investigations by local police.

"Six members from the Drug Investigation Branch and forensic scientists came to Whyalla on Wednesday and started taking the lab apart," Senior Sergeant Sims said.

"The two were charged the same afternoon and the visiting team wrapped up their work at the home on Thursday.

"They have taken back components of the lab to Adelaide for further tests."

Whyalla News was informed about the raid and the forensic team by an anonymous caller.

A resident living in the area said they were surprised to see the house cordoned off but did not know what had happened.

Senior Sergeant Sims said police were always on the lookout for drug producers and pushers.

He said any information from members of the public is always welcome.
