D’faces youths can reach their dreams

01 Aug, 2008 02:35 PM
D’faces of youth arts received funding through The Office for Youth, as part of the Reach Your Dreams program, for 25 youths to undertake the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Funding is for 25 disadvantaged young people, 14 to 25 years, to complete the Bronze Award level over the next six to 12 months.

D’faces will be working with all youth relevant organisations including Smith Family Learning for Life, schools and individuals to ensure that as many young people as possible are offered this great opportunity.

The Rotary Club of Whyalla has joined with D’faces on this program and is providing financial assistance to offset the cost of the Adventurous Journey component of the program.

The club will also undertake responsibility for ensuring the completion of the Community Service component by inviting Duke of Edinburgh participants to join with them on their projects across Whyalla.

Rotary club of Whyalla service director Alistair Stephenson said this is a great opportunity.

“This is a wonderful program for young people to take part in.

“The personal development and leadership skills that you get out of the Duke of Edinburgh Award is life changing and sets you upon a positive path for the future.

“I say this as a past recipient of the award,” Mr Stephenson said.

D’faces of youth arts company manager Cathy Thompson is excited to be involved with the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for young people interested in the arts to become involved in working towards obtaining the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

“By participating in D’faces workshops and special projects, plus undertaking some community service with the Rotary Club of Whyalla, they are able to achieve an award that will be a positive addition to any young person’s resume.

“The funding means that there is no cost to young people to enrol or take part.

“All D’faces workshops are included and we are hopeful of accessing some additional funding for the Adventurous Journey to make the entire program available to all young people,” Ms Thompson said.

In addition to the three skills based areas an integral component of the program is the Adventurous Journey.

D’faces are excited to be working with Rob Young of the highly successful and internationally recognised Vision Quest program to develop a three day/two night camp based on the Vision Quest model.

Rob Oliphant from Office for Youth and Manager of the Duke of Edinburgh Award in South Australia will be in Whyalla on Tuesday August 12 to train D’faces staff, Rotary members and other partners in the assessment, leadership and management of the Award.

Participants will also be able to gain SACE points by undertaking the award; this is an added benefit of program.
