Environmentalist and educator Clinton Garrett said the price of fuel should increase further so that less people use it and fewer pollutants are emitted into the air.
He said he is high time more discussions were held on the real issues that affected the environment and nature.
Mr Garrett said researchers were digging deeper and further into the seas and land to find oil and more young drivers were cruising around with big cars aimlessly.
"This all has an adverse impact on the environment and that is why I feel the price of petrol should be increased," Mr Garrett said.
"The increase in price will force a lot of vehicle owners to think twice before going for a drive or just cruising around to kill time.
"More people will start walking to work or plan their shopping wisely so that they do not have to make several trips to the supermarket in one week.
"We have to start thinking if the planet can take all the pollutants and hopefully with increased fuel price and less use of cars we can expect some positive impact on the environment."
